Meet the team - Ian Grimwood

The team at Weatherbys perform a wide variety of roles, and every day is different for our people. Come with us as we take you behind the scenes and hear first hand from some of our people in this "meet the team" series. In this instalment, get to know our Racecard Manager, Ian Grimwood.

When did you start working for Weatherbys and what was it that drew you to the company originally?

I was working for Mark Johnston in Middleham when I met my wife in 2004 - she is from Northamptonshire so when we decided to set up home together, Weatherbys was an obvious choice! I joined the business at the start of 2007 in the Commercial Services Team before moving across to the Racecard Team.

I used to speak to Weatherbys virtually daily in my role as Racing Secretary at Mark’s and I had always been impressed by not only the efficiency and professionalism but also the friendly way in which all calls were handled. The customer always came first.

How would you describe the company culture and values?

We’re high-performing and respectful. In our team particularly we value taking ownership of our work and are constantly looking for ways to get better. We’re adaptable – especially when it comes to our printing-related deadlines, and are always quick to address feedback and provide the best product to the customer.

What’s your proudest achievement or moment in your time at Weatherbys?

Whenever I see a racecard on course that I produced always gives me a sense of pride, particularly if it is being held by Royalty or someone famous! Additionally, I recruited and trained all of the current Racecard team, and I really enjoy seeing them progress in their careers and deliver exceptional service and products.

What is one thing people may not know about your role and one thing people may not know about Weatherbys?

In addition to producing racecards for all the British racecourses, we also produce racecards for Down Royal, The Curragh and Punchestown in Ireland. We also produce racecard content for The Bahrain Turf Club, Emirates Racing Authority, The Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia and Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club – all of which are created in English & Arabic.

How has Weatherbys changed from your first day to now?

We’re delivering a wider range of products and services now than before, particularly in printing. Some products like The Racing Calendar have changed formats but essentially stayed the same, but we’re adapting elements in print like never before - working in different languages, using new printing techniques like digital presses and providing innovative solutions to printing challenges that help provide a better service to the customer.
