Thoroughbred registrations
It is a legal requirement for all Thoroughbreds in Great Britain to have a passport.
They must also have a functioning microchip, which must be recorded in the passport by the Passport Issuing Organisation (PIO).
A foal must be microchipped by a vet before a passport can be applied for.
The owner must apply for a passport from Weatherbys before the foal is 6 months old or before the 30th of November - whichever is the later.
Once the passport is issued, it is your responsibility to keep it safe.
You can complete all your registrations online via General Stud Book Online.
It is also a legal requirement to register ownership with us within 30 days of acquiring a horse. This also applies for Thoroughbred and Non-Thoroughbred Register horses which are not subject to an ownership record for racing or breeding.
You can complete change of ownership applications online via General Stud Book Online.
Alternatively, please download, complete and return the Non-Racing/Non-Breeding Change of Ownership form below, together with the horse’s passport and the indicated fee.
If the original passport has been lost, owners are required to apply for a duplicate.
If your horse was not born in Great Britain or Ireland, you will need to apply to the relevant foreign Stud Book Authority to obtain a duplicate passport. Please contact us to obtain the most appropriate contact details for the relevant Stud Book Authority.
In order to apply for a duplicate passport please download, complete and return the Duplicate Passport Application form and the Age & Markings form below with a set of veterinary markings (including the scanned microchip number if present), plus the relevant fee.
This process includes a Change of Ownership, if required, at no additional cost.
For further information on Passports for racing and breeding animals, please refer to Great Britain Registrations.
The law requires a change of ownership to be registered with us within 30 days of acquiring a horse. A non-racing, non-breeding ownership will be required for all horses not actively racing or breeding for a period of 30 days or longer (including pre-training, retired animals and mares whose progeny will not be registered with Weatherbys).
It is a legal requirement to advise us when your horse dies, within 30 days, and return the passport, which will be invalidated.
Weatherbys' passports for horses that are deceased should be returned to: Weatherbys Stud Book Dept, Sanders Road, Wellingborough, Northants NN8 4BX. There is no charge for this service, and they can be returned once invalidated.
