Dark Horses To Follow - Part 2

In the second instalment of 'Dark Horses To Follow', Paul Ferguson, author of Jumpers To Follow and the Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide, gives us a further six horses who it could pay to follow during the 2024-2025 Jumps season.

MY NOBLE LORD
Trainer: Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero
Another who has been bought by JP McManus, he is now in training with Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero, with the duo having provided the owner with Cheltenham Festival success in 2023 courtesy of Iroko. This three-year-old (pictured) is a half-brother to a four-time hurdles winner and won four times from five starts for Michael Bell on the Flat this year. His latest win came off a mark of 79 at Hamilton and given that he copes with an ease in the ground and appears to stay well, the son of Noble Mission looks to be an interesting recruit to the juvenile hurdle division.

NOT SO SOBERS
Trainer: David Killahena & Graeme McPherson
Runner-up to the well-bred and highly-promising The New Lion on debut, he returned to Market Rasen to win a good-ground bumper in taking fashion during May. Held-up and ridden with confidence by Kielan Woods, the five-year-old was angled around runners as the field turned for home and showed a fine turn of foot to quicken away and win with a bit to spare. The son of Jack Hobbs looks sure to appreciate a relative speed test over hurdles, so could be out fairly early in the season whilst the ground remains in his favour.

TALK TO THE MAN
Trainer: Paul Nicholls
A good-looking son of Walk In The Park, he ran out a commanding winner of a four-year-old maiden Point when trained by Donnchadh Doyle. He was well on top at the line – despite a mistake two out – and having moved to Paul Nicholls, will carry the silks of Mrs Johnny de la Hey when making his debut under Rules. Having recorded a much quicker time than the winner of division two, he doesn’t look devoid of pace so I would expect him to run in a bumper and having initially been bought at the Goffs UK Spring sale in May 2023, he has been handed an entry in the valuable bumper at Newbury next March. Nicholls won that race with the exciting Regent’s Stroll earlier this year.

THE BLUE ROOM
Trainer: Olly Murphy
Another who has yet to run under Rules, the Order Of St George four-year-old shaped with abundant promise when runner-up in a maiden at Dromahane in April. Coming from off the pace, he could be spotted moving nicely in behind and despite making a slight mistake at the final fence, ran on nicely to take second place. Another who looks to possess the requisite pace to be aimed at a bumper to begin with, he has been purchased by Noel and Valerie Moran, so will reappear wearing the famous Bective Stud silks.

TUTTI QUANTI
Trainer: Paul Nicholls
Runner-up on his sole start in France when trained by Francois Nicolle, he filled the same position on his only start for Paul Nicholls, at Taunton in January. Taking on his elders in a novices’ hurdle – rather than running in a juvenile – he raced enthusiastically under Harry Cobden and having jumped to the front two out, was beaten by a stronger stayer in the closing stages, having shown signs of greenness. The winner wasn’t seen again but the third won his next two to advertise the form and this son four-year-old looks sure to get off the mark before too long. Not running again was probably a blessing as he will remain a novice for the whole of this season and although he has an official BHA Rating of 125 after just two starts, I expect him to be campaigned in novice company in the coming months.

WOODLAND PARK
Trainer: Olly Murphy
Trainer Olly Murphy looked to have an above-average bunch of bumper horses last season – with Wade Out and Castle Ivers possibly the standout pairing – and this son of Walk In The Park might just go under the radar a little. Third on debut at Kempton (winner ran well under a penalty at Ayr on Scottish Grand National day), he took a big step forward to win in taking fashion at Market Rasen and given his size, he probably did well to win around such a tight track. An imposing five-year-old, there is stamina in his pedigree and he is one to note once upped in trip over hurdles.

All of these horse feature in this year’s edition of Jumpers To Follow, which was published on 13th September and can be ordered via Weatherbys Shop.
